WHAT IS YOGA NIDRA?

Many days we find ourselves rushing to keep up with the pace of life. The constant need to get everything done can drain us physically, mentally and energetically.

When people relay this to me, many times I usually recommend meditation. So far I have come to realize that this is not a one-size fits all situation.

When we work ourselves to the point of exhaustion and complete depletion that is the time that our focus needs to be turned inward. It is time for us to seek restoration. This is where Yoga Nidra comes in to play. Yoga Nidra encourages relaxation and stress relief while improving our nervous and endocrine system, directly positively impacting our hormones. Both Meditation and Yoga Nidra help our cells regeneration and repair, and reduce anxiety levels and improve our mood receptors.

Yoga Nidra can be practised through an online recording or in the presence of an experienced practitioner.

Yoga Nidra is a state in which the body is brought to a completely relaxed state, and the practitioner or recipient becomes systematically and increasingly aware of the inner world by following a set of verbal instructions. The inner world is your connection to your consciousness and inner being. This state of consciousness is different from meditation, in which concentration on a single focus is required. While in Yoga Nidra, the person will withdraw from the external senses while senses allowing them to remain in a state that allows them to hear instructions. Yoga Nidra is one of the deepest states of consciousness that allows for total relaxation.

  • Just be your regular self. Feelings of uneasiness are normal. Ask your instructor about every and all regulations.
  • Give yourself time to get to your class. You should be in a calm state. Driving through traffic can be extremely frustrating.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and consider wearing something to keep you warm.
  • Falling asleep is not uncommon. There is no need to feel embarrassed if it happens. You may feel distracted by random thoughts during the class. Accept your thoughts and let them come and go.
  • Ensure your body is fully supported while lying down on the mat. If there is lower back pain or other injury, proper support will ensure that your body gets all the care it needs.

When you’re ready, take a deep breath, relax, and continue to follow the sound of your instructor’s voice.
